What to Expect

A Day Well Spent

Since there is no cure for Alzheimer's disease, the goal of treatment with Namenda® (memantine HCl)*, as with all Alzheimer's medications, is to help treat the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. Patients taking Namenda have experienced:

  • Sustained ability to perform activities of daily living, such as grooming, finding belongings and conversing 1-3
  • Improved behavior and delayed onset of behavioral symptoms 1,4
  • Proven benefits in thinking 1-2,5
  • Low rate of side effects and low risk of drug interactions 6,7
  • Low incidence of gastrointestinal side effects, including diarrhea, nausea and vomiting 6,7

Once on Namenda, please keep in mind that either no change in Alzheimer's disease symptoms or a slower decline in symptoms are positive results compared to the rapid decline a person with Alzheimer's disease might experience without treatment. It is important to understand that every day that symptom progression is delayed may allow for the person with Alzheimer's disease to spend more quality time with his or her loved ones.

If you are not seeing new symptoms, that may mean Namenda is working. The goal of therapy is to help your loved one live at home and remain independent longer than he or she could without treatment.
